BZ 24034

BZ 24034
BZ 24034 showed in the purple and lambed in the purple. A show ewe for Raesa as a lamb and what a one-year run she had. Wait. Didn’t I just say that. Won her class at THE EVENT, Junior Champion Ewe and Reserve Champion Ewe Overall, Reserve Champion Ewe at the Great Plains Show (Got beat by BZ 23086), Reserve Champion Ewe at the Western Regional Suffolk Show (Got beat by BZ 23086), 1st January Ewe Lamb at the Iowa State Fair Open and Junior Shows/Reserve Slick Shorn Ewe in the Junior Show (Got beat by BZ 23086), Champion Ewe at the South Dakota State Fair Junior Suffolk Show and 3rd at Louisville in both the Open and Junior Show. Was not shown as a yearling, because she was bred to ATLAS for fall lambs which turned into a pair of ewe lambs, lot 4 sold to Lloyd McCabe, CA in our March Click to Claim Sale and one is still in the barn. 23086 and 24034 personify the type of Suffolks we are trying to raise to get to the WINNERS CIRCLE and be high end GENERATORS in the lambing room. 24034 is sired by BOOM and BZ 56 a SLACK 8088 daughter. I would say she is the best 8088 daughter we have but, that would be shortchanging a sire group that has given us a multitude of FOUNDATION females. But 56 ranks right up there and has produced rams working at Russell Sheep Company in IN and 56’s dam BZ 7003 had one that worked well for Abeldt Suffolks in KS.

Barzel Suffolks
This picture was taken in October 2017 to demonstrate the look that our brood ewes maintain on grass post-breeding. This is the ewe battery that produces our commercial range rams. We emphasize growth performance as the single most important trait in our Suffolk range rams, followed closely by structure, fleshing ability and longevity. Large-framed ewes whose mature body weight is 225-250 lbs. produce bucks that exhibit these traits that our commercial ram buyers demand.

Barzel 75

Bar-Zel 75
BZ 75 is out of Slack 8088 and a nine year old brood ewe Bar-Zel 1122. Raesa had this ewe lamb picked as a show ewe before she left the lambing jugs. Flawless in her structure, round and deep in her middle and rear flank and easy on the eyes from the side. Young with nothing but an accomplished list of showring winnings, we expect big things from this one in the future. Her phenotype is what we want all of our ewes to look like and her outcross pedigree allows us to breed her to multiple rams to accomplish different objectives in our flock.
  Raesa’s run with 75 included:

  • Supreme Champion Ewe at Brookings County 4-H Show
  • Supreme Champion Ewe at SD State Fair FFA Show
  • Champion Ewe at SD Junior Suffolk Show
  • Champion Suffolk Ewe SD State Fair 4-H Show

Barzel 9046

Bar-Zel 9046
9046 was Junior Champion Suffolk Ewe at the All American Junior Show in Kansas in 2019. The picture does not accurately portray the phenotypic quality this ewe possess. She is at the top of the scorecard for top and rib shape, femininity, and is a flock favorite for udder quality. Genetically, she is a double bred Slick Slack sired by a home raised ram we called “3D” and dammed by the BZ 5007. Same mamma as Betsy. She had a ram lamb as a yearling ewe and is about ready to wean a super set of twins this year. Her ewe lamb will be in our keeper pen and ram lamb is a stud prospect.

Barzel Suffolks

Bar-Zel 8030
Betsy was a very competitive show ewe and an even more accomplished brood ewe. She is a grand daughter of Slick Slack and daughter of BZ 5007. 5007 is an absolute beast. She was ahead of her time in the Suffolk breed and I will admit it I was slow to realize what a breeding treasure she is. Jim Van Dyke was not and he got 2 of the 3 daughters we sold out of 5007. Since then we have hoarded five. We will build our flock around her genetics. Betsy had the most decorated career of the 5007 females. She was Reserve Slick Suffolk ewe at the 2018 Suffolk Junior Show in Indiana, Supreme Ewe at the SD Summer Spotlight Show and Champion Slicked and 3rd Overall Ewe at the SD State Fair 4-H Show. Her contributions as a brood ewe tracks closely behind those of her dam. Last year she raised triplets unassisted and this year she weaned at set of twins. High growth sheep with design, muscle and growth with phenotypic quality.

BarZel 9064

Bar-Zel 9064
Bar Zel 9064 was a fun one for Raesa to show. She was Champion Suffolk market lamb at the 2019 All American Junior Show in Kansas. This ewe excelled in foot size, width, touch and look. Particularly, her width of hip and pin set. She has a great pair of lambs on the ground this spring and her ewe lamb looks like she will follow in her dam's footsteps and head to the show pen while her brother will be an elite wether this summer. Show ewes don’t get special treatment at our place once their career on the chips is completed. They need to generate and forage with the rest of the ewes. 9064 is an easy-keeping ewe that has a tight udder, great teat placement and loads of milk. Plus she is dead sexy on grass. Watch for more rams, ewes and wethers from our program as Raesa and Christy are going to dedicate a portion of our flock to creating competitive Suffolk club lambs.

Bar-Zel 17
A top show prospect in the 2020 Pandemic Show String. This ewe has the phenotypic and genetic versatility to be used in either flock within BZ Suffolks. If we breed her to a muscle making ram, she will add rib shape and mass from the side profile and base width coming and going, not to mention a beautiful Suffolk head. That Suffolk breed type comes from her sire MacCauley 3248 (Spot) and maternal sire and grandsire, Kimm 13084 and Kimm 7012. If we want to performance oriented Suffolks with growth, muscle, fleshing ability and function we breed her to a ram that replicates her traits. Females like 17 get me excited about raising Suffolk sheep as she can hit a home run in every breeding pen.
